The author reports on a new initiative by NAPPSI: the creation and
dissemination of a Notification to Clinicians on Sharps Injury Prevention.
This advisory distinguishes between “primary” and “secondary”
prevention. NAPPSI is asking the FDA and others to include the advisory
in all official documents that provide guidelines and alerts to clinicians.
The advisory offers several advantages over earlier guidelines: increased
focus on primary prevention; a comprehensive approach; protection
of patients as well as workers; and a clinically tested strategy.
