Associations' Digest for the National Association of Residents and
Interns
Winter 2002/2003
In this article from a newsletter of the National Association of
Residents and Interns (NARI), the authors describe the risks associated
with using sutures to secure catheters, as well as the alternative:
sutureless adhesive securement devices. The authors cite research
indicating that the risk of an accidental needlestick from suture
needles can be as high as 2 percent. The article also includes an
anesthesiologist's account of a high-risk needlestick experience.
Details are provided for participating in a NAPPSI survey that gathers
data on the prevalence of such sharps injuries.
